Dan! My vote goes for thumbnail #15. The trees are so creepy and look like witches' hands, with long, sharp finger-nails. My suggestions: make the composition even wider (more like a Panavision shot, of a ratio of about 2 wide to 1 tall). The trees located the closer to the left and right edge of the composition could look more "normal," but as they get closer to the middle, they become more threatening like you drew them. Next, think of the textures of the bark. Could it be non-traditional bark texture? Since this part of the woods is the space for evil rituals, what would be on the bark (signs, patterns, knife-marks, engravings)?
In your thumbnail, the horizon is about a third of the way up. You could exaggerate that more (either a little lower, giving more view to the fire smoke and the sky, or higher, giving more view to the contorted path leading to the devilish clearing).
Finally, explore all the other elements: rocks (shapes, markings), the "furnishing" for the diabolical rituals (altar? Stonehenge-like structures? benches? Columns? Flags? etc.). Only make sure that what you depict doesn't contradict the original text by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
So, I encourage you to do bigger and more detailed versions of this thumbnail, and to really go "crazy" with your vision (don't hold back!).

Let's see that!
Take care!
